2006 Belmont Stakes Horse-by-Horse Capsules

1. PLATINUM COUPLE
------------------
Jockey: Jose Espinoza
Trainer: Joseph Lostritto
Odds: 30-1

Trounced in Grade 1 company so far, losing the Wood Memorial to
Bob and John by 10 1/2 lengths and the Preakness to Bernardini
by 22 1/2 lengths; broke his maiden and posted a 16-1 upset in
the Damon Runyon within a 22-day span.


2. SUNRIVER

Jockey: Rafael Bejarano
Trainer: Todd Pletcher
Odds: 4-1

A homebred, he enters the Belmont Stakes with three wins in
seven starts; won Belmont's Grade 2 Peter Pan, a race that has
produced five Belmont Stakes winners including A.P.Indy (1992,
Colonial Affair (1993) and Lemon Drop Kid( 1999); connections
hoped to run Sunriver in the Kentucky Derby, but the colt was
excluded because he lacked the sufficient graded stakes earnings.


3. HEMINGWAY'S KEY

Trainer: Nick Zito
Odds: 15-1

Is owned by New York Yankees boss George Steinbrenner; has never
run at Belmont Park; did not run in the Kentucky Derby and
finished third in the Preakness Stakes; "This horse has got a
lot of energy," Zito said. "You've really got to do a lot to get
him tired." Rose won last year's Belmont Stakes aboard Afleet
Alex.


4. BOB AND JOHN

Trainer: Bob Baffert
Odds: 5-1

After winning Aqueduct's Grade 1 Wood Memorial over Jazil, he
finished 17th in the Kentucky Derby; did not run in the
Preakness; Baffert has won the Belmont once in six tries(Point
Given in 2001); Gomez never has ridden in the Belmont.


5. HIGH FINANCE

Trainer: Richard Violette Jr.
Odds: 12-1

Enters the Belmont Stakes off consecutive open-length victories
after breaking his maiden at Keeneland and winning an
entry-level allowance here the second day of the meet; went
0-for-3 in maiden races at Gulfstream Park this year, but
finished second to future Preakness winner Bernardini in his
last Florida Start; the last horse to win the Belmont Stakes
without a race farther than a mile and a sixteenth under his belt
was Conquistador Cielo in 1982; High Finance never has run
longer than a mile


6. OH SO AWESOME

Trainer: Jimmy Jerkens
Odds: 20-1

Owns a win, two seconds and a pair of thirds in seven lifetime
starts; has only raced on dirt, in this country and for trainer
Jimmy Jerkens, once finishing third in the May 19 Match the
Hatch; experienced in marathon routes after racing in France
over the spring; has started twice at 1 5/16th miles and once
at a mile and three furlongs.


7. DEPUTY GLITTERS

Odds: 15-1

Broke his maiden at first asking at Saratoga on September 1,
and then was well-beaten in his next three starts; in his second
start of 2006, he was second in the Sam F. Davis Stakes at
Tampa Bay Downs at 63-1 in his first start beyond a mile;
followed his Davis performance by winning the grade 3 Tampa Bay
Derby at 8-1, upsetting favored Bluegrass Cat, who later ran
second in the Kentucky Derby.


8. JAZIL

Trainer: Kiaran McLaughlin
Odds: 10-1

Came with a late run to overtake tiring Keyed Entry in the final
strides and finished second to Bob and John in Aqueduct's Grade
1 Wood Memorial; finished in a dead-heat for fourth in the
Kentucky Derby, but skipped the Preakness for the Belmont
Stakes; has yet to win a stakes race.


9. BLUEGRASS CAT

Jockey: John Velazquez
Trainer: Todd Pletcher
Odds: 3-1

The morning-line favorite for the Belmont Stakes, finished
second in the Kentucky Derby; did not run in the Preakness
Stakes; was second in the Tampa Bay Derby and fourth as the
favorite in the Blue Grass Stakes.


10. DOUBLE GALORE

Trainer: Myung Kwon Cho
Odds: 30-1

Broke his maiden in his fifth career start at Hollywood Park on
May 19; Son of Grand Slam, his dam, Squall Linda, is by 1990
Kentucky Derby runner-up and Preakness winner Summer Squall.


11. STEPPENWOLFER

Trainer: Dan Peitz
Odds: 9-2

Finished third in the Kentucky Derby; did not run in the
Preakness; has yet to win a stakes race; the colt is named after
the 1960's and 70's rock band Steppenwolf, whose popular hits
include "Magic Carpet Ride", "The Pusher" and "Born To Be Wild."


12. SACRED LIGHT

Jockey: Victor Espinoza
Trainer: David Hofmans
Odds: 15-1

Won his only race via Disqualification; was placed first in
an August 25 Del Mar maiden race; winless in five starts this
year, the colt's only off-the-board finish came in the Santa
Anita Derby after stumbling badly at the start; sire Holy Bull
was a multiple Grade 1 winner at Belmont Park having won the
Futurity, Met Mile and Wooodward.
